Mobile Listening |
With the rapid development of mobile telephones and the improved coverage of 3G networks it is now possible to use them to hear Caroline on the move.
You should make sure that you have a proper monthly data subscription as pay as you go data charges can be very expensive. There are some reasonable deals around.
Many data packages have an allowance of data usually quoted in gigabytes (GB) per month. The data consumed listening to a stream will depend on the stream bitrate which is measured in kilobits per second (kbps or just k on the listen live pages). The calculator below will allow you to estimate how many hours of streaming the allowance will support. Remember this assumes that you do not use it for anything else.

Some mobile devices have Windows Media Player included, they should be able to connect directly to our 22k stream by entering the address of the stream above
Nokia Phones. Some of the more recent Nokia phones, such as the N96 have Internet Radio Player pre-installed, whereas others need to have it installed by the user. The application can be downloaded from Nokia's website, and installed on almost all Nokia 3G phones in the "N" and "E" series. You can either download direct on your mobile, or onto a computer and transfer to your mobile using the Nokia PC Suite.
From the Nokia homepage at www.nokia.co.uk, click the "Explore Services" tab, then click the "Music" tab, and "Internet Radio" will appear as an option in the menu on the left hand side. Select the download option, and follow the instructions.
For phones which use the Symbian S60 operating system, you can also find the Internet radio Player on the www.s60.com homepage.
Once the radio player is installed you can start it under the "applications" menu on your phone and simply go into the "search" option and enter "Caroline". Within a few moments you'll be listening to Caroline in the palm of your hand. Not only is the telephone a similar size and weight to an old fashioned pocket transistor radio, but the sound quality is not very different either! There are two directory entries for Caroline, 'Radio Caroline' (24 or 64k mp3) and Radio Caroline aacPlus (48k aacPlus). The aacPlus stream is not supported by all Nokia phones but should give good results on those that work.
Other phones with Java. The RadioBee player version 1.52 available from here works well with the 24k mp3 stream.
There are other players available to listen to internet radio, not all of these will work with Caroline. One which is recommended and already has Caroline listed is available from www.moodio.fm. It will work with popular phones from manufacturers like BlackBerry, Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Samsung, Motorola, etc. This service will enable you to choose what data rate (audio quality) you want.
A similar service from www.tunin.fm also works well for a number of Caroline listeners and also works with the iPhone and iPod Touch. Another player which will work with the iPhone and iPod Touch is an App available from the iTunes store called Tuner.
Also for the iPhone and iTouch there is a link to a page below which will play Caroline through the integrated Quicktime player. If you bookmark the page and save it to your Home Screen you will be able to launch the stream with two touches.

Once you have got Caroline working on your mobile gadget you can connect it to a cheap FM transmitter and listen in stereo through your car radio.
